Two bags of cash, with old 500 notes, found from union room of Surendranath college
Kolkata's political landscape has been rocked once again by the recovery of a "mountain of money," this time within the confines of an educational institution. On Tuesday, a shocking discovery was made at Surendranath College when two bags filled with cash were found inside a cupboard in the student union room.
The discovery occurred when Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials, accompanied by cleaning staff and authorised by college professors, broke the lock of the room for maintenance work. Preliminary estimates suggest the bags could contain between ₹50 lakh to ₹60 lakh. However, the notes are in rubble after a termite infestation. As per reports, the slightly visible notes are of the old 500 denominations.
BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh from Baranagar has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC), demanding the immediate arrest of the college’s student leaders. Ghosh alleged that the money belongs to the common people and was likely extorted from students during the admission season. He further claimed that the college's function fund still holds over ₹1.5 crore and accused the entire TMC leadership—" from head to toe"—of being complicit in this financial misconduct.
